Two years ago I spent three or four days chopping back half a dozen privet bushes on our property. I drilled holes in the stumps and poured in non-toxic weed killer. There wasn’t much last summer, but this year it has returned with a vengeance. It turns out my earlier work only amounted to pruning.
@billbennett.bsky.social Ah…. good idea. I used a non toxic weedkiller which claims to deal with privet, but this might be better.
I use Banvine for stumps, it has an application procedure for stump killing, mixed with diesel as the carrier. The 24-d helps a lot with killing the root system.
It takes a few goes - 4-6 in my experience, and the more established they are, the more they’ll come back. Chop it back and poison again - the faster you do that, the less they’ll come back. I use glyphosate + metsulfuron + penetrant.
@billbennett.bsky.social I thought that might be toxic, but I see Forest and Bird uses it… so I guess I can.
When I used creosote - quite some years ago - made sure all the exposed stump was painted, and drilled a few holes. I don’t know where to buy it nowadays.
It is toxic. It’s a plant that requires a toxic solution if you want it to stop coming back. We’ve got a lot of tough weeds on the grounds I work on, and it’s one of the worst.
www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/amazing… I’d stick with herbicides if possible as creosote is quite persistent in the soil.
Also glyphosate is koolaid compared to a lot of herbicides that are available over the counter, and its mineral water compared to what you can buy with a grow safe licence.
Both are very selectively toxic for plants. Glyphosate is also very selective for the particular plant it’s used on; metsulfuron will hang around in the soil for months if it’s used on soil
