From my site 15 years ago. Looking back I’d say musicians have done way better than journalists, but that’s not a high bar.

@billbennett.bsky.social You’re right. Although that’s a curious point because when I started out in newspapers in the UK, the big national newspapers barely carried any advertising, some didn’t carry any. Almost all of the revenue was from copy sales. And it was good revenue.

@billbennett.bsky.social Definitely. The big NZ papers were more like regional UK papers. When I arrived to work on The Dominion in 1987 it only circulated south of Taupo and there were daily papers in places like Palmerston North, Hawkes’ Bay and even Masterton.
